The slow pace of slow season

The slow pace of slow season

| by Jessica

When you run a hotel there is a busy season and a slow season. Even with the relatively consistent weather that we have in Hopkins Belize this seasonality applies to us as well. This year we have undertaken a fairly large room renovation project during slow season....

Newbie bloopers

| by Jessica
I think my mistakes in life are the things that make me laugh the hardest. Once enough time has passed, the most embarrassing moments are usually the funniest to think back on. It will be fun to put some of these in writing and have them to look back on for a good laugh. These are some of our funny mess-ups while being resort owners.

Hopkins Garifuna Immersion

I’ve heard so many amazing things about the Garifuna Immersion tour from day one, so this past summer I decided to take the kids.

Scam or not, you decide

| by Jessica

We’ve owned the hotel and restaurant for one year now. I have to say, the best part of owning this business is meeting and talking with all the guests. I really enjoy meeting people and hearing about their lives back home: their stories. But this story is about our our very unique guest, I’ll call Rick. I am not using his real name, to protect his privacy.

Our mini-break…or Trucks, Buses, Vans and Canoes

The kids got 2 weeks off from school for Easter break and despite it being a very busy couple of weeks for the resort, we really wanted to take some time away as a family.

High Season and New Businesses

High Season and New Businesses

When we arrived in August it was the low season and it was also hurricane season and the rainy season. We had a healthy amount of bookings through August, but September and October were dead in terms of bookings. Good time for us to get acquainted with the business before high season hits.

A Day in the (new) Life

| by Jessica

I thought it would be fun to chronicle one day of mine to give you an idea of what my new life is like — living in Hopkins, Belize and as a resort owner and mom.

Ziplining at Bocawina

Ziplining at Bocawina

Bocawina is a national park very close to Beaches and Dreams. You can do zip lining as well as rapelling down a waterfall. But, for this outing, we opted for just the ziplining. Fay quickly overcame her fear and we all had a really good time. Rex definitely enjoyed going fast!

A Trip to Belize City

A Trip to Belize City

After our marathon two days of closing, we also needed to take a trip to Belize City to transfer the titles of the resort boats. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive to Belize City so the fastest way to go is to take a little prop plane on a 15 minute flight from Dangriga.

Closing Day - Part 1 and 2

Closing Day - Part 1 and 2

| by Jessica

Wednesday was set as closing day — the day we take ownership of the resort. Ryan had been working with a lawyer from Belize City for months, putting together the contracts and sorting out the details of the purchase with the former owner.
