How to buy sneakers in Dangriga

How to buy sneakers in Dangriga

| by Jessica

Somehow, this past fall, Rex’s feet must have grown very quickly and I found myself in immediate need of some new sneakers. Obviously, after living in Belize for over a year, I knew a next day delivery from Zappos was not gonna happen. I would probably have to drive 2 hours to Belmopan or 1.5 hours to Placencia to find a shoe store. But I didn’t want to make that drive, at least not anytime soon.

I’ve heard so many amazing things about the Garifuna Immersion tour from day one, so this past summer I decided to take the kids.

Looking back on our first year of school in Belize

Looking back on our first year of school in Belize

| by Jessica

The kids finished up their first year at Sittee River Methodist School in June and I finished my first year learning about how schools work here in Belize compared to what I experienced as a child in the Midwest or what my kids experienced in NYC. Its been an amazing year filled with ups and downs. And now we are ready to start our 2nd year!

The kids got 2 weeks off from school for Easter break and despite it being a very busy couple of weeks for the resort, we really wanted to take some time away as a family.

Our Christmas in Belize

Our Christmas in Belize

The Christmas season is here, our first in Belize. So, what is Christmas like in Belize? There are many traditions that are surprisingly similar to what I’m used to, like the kids’ school had a holiday show. But then each tradition might have a slight Belizean flair to it.

Birthday in Belize with Chocolate and San Ignacio

Birthday in Belize with Chocolate and San Ignacio

Before coming to Belize, I was already anticipating Fay’s birthday, which would occur within a couple months of our arrival. Knowing that Fay had not made many friends here yet, and wouldn’t be celebrating with a party filled with other 10 year olds, I wanted to make her birthday feel special in other ways.

We arrived in Belize about 4 weeks before the school year began. Ryan and I both wanted the kids to be here for a nice length of time before school began, so they could get comfortable just being in a new country and at the resort. As the days counted down and we got closer to school starting, there were knots in my stomach.

Ziplining at Bocawina

Ziplining at Bocawina

Bocawina is a national park very close to Beaches and Dreams. You can do zip lining as well as rapelling down a waterfall. But, for this outing, we opted for just the ziplining. Fay quickly overcame her fear and we all had a really good time. Rex definitely enjoyed going fast!

Cave Tubing

The entrance of the cave was beautiful, so dark inside and so much vegetation lining the entrance. We saw stalagmites and stalactites at the entrance. And I learned or re-learned that you cannot have one without the other.

Mayan Ruins -- Xunantunich

Mayan Ruins -- Xunantunich

One of the fun parts of learning how to run our new business is learning about the tours. The best way to learn about each tour is to go on it! That way we can tell our guests what to expect and help them choose the best tour to suit their interests. Ryan and I decided to take the kids to the Mayan Ruins at Xunantunich, coupled with a cave tubing tour.
