Hiking, Waterfalls, Adventure - And Family!
When we first moved to Belize, we bought Beaches and Dreams Resort and hit the ground running. One of the first things we did was to go on all of the many tours available from our hotel. Of course you did not have to twist my arm to go on all these tours. I wanted to learn about Belize, experience nature, see animals up close and learn about the many cultures of Belize. We managed to go on almost all of them. But the kids were only 7 and 9 years old, so I saved Waterfall Rappelling for later, when the kids would be older. Fast forward to today, my daughter is in college and my son is 14 years old.
Recently, my cousin and his family came for a visit to Belize. When he told me they would be doing the Rappelling tour, I knew my time had finally come. I knew this would be a great way to spend the day with family, experiencing something challenging and exhilarating together.
The Best Hike in Southern Belize is Antelope Falls
I can confidently say that Antelope Falls is the best hike in our area of Belize. It can be challenging, and it will make you tired. But the payoffs are numerous. The view from the top is spectacular and the swim in the waterfall at the top is otherworldly. You may even be alone when you reach the waterfall pool. No need to scrub out those other people in your social media posts.
We had a great guide who pointed out different trees, and nuts and taught us about the creatures and vegetation living in this area. We walked for about 45 min or an hour to get to the top. As you reach the top, you will encounter a rope to help with the steepest part. Thats when you know you are almost there!

Along the way, there are several spots with fantastic views. This photo can’t begin to do it justice. At one point, Rex pointed out in the distance and said “you can see the ocean”. I hadn’t realized it, but you absolutely can.

Rappelling - Lots of Water and Lots of Fun
I was super nervous before taking my first step. I really had no idea what to expect. Rappelling was like nothing I’ve ever done before. The guides gave us a lot of instructions. I clearly remember: “keep your feet apart for stability” and “don’t look up into the water”. This was the most adventurous thing I have done in year. It was so much fun. I was at the crossroads of fear and thrill the entire time I was descending. I would to it again in a heartbeat. And, as a bonus, I got to watch my 14 year old to it too!

Rappelling Is A Great Family Tour
The only restriction on rappelling is your own desire for a tough hike and you must be 100 lbs. The kids in our group were all 13+ yrs old, but on the skinny side. A couple of them came in just below 100 lbs, but the guides helped make it work.
So, if you have teens, this is a once in a lifetime tour that the whole family can do together. I know my cousin’s family and I got a little bit closer through this shared experience.
