The slow pace of slow season

The slow pace of slow season

| by Jessica

When you run a hotel there is a busy season and a slow season. Even with the relatively consistent weather that we have in Hopkins Belize this seasonality applies to us as well. This year we have undertaken a fairly large room renovation project during slow season....

Hopkins Day 2019

Hopkins Day 2019

Hopkins Day is an annual event, usually at the end of July. The week leading up to Hopkins Day is a big, annual week of clean up where the grass is cut and any debris or trash is picked up. The village looks its best. Everyone pitches in because they are proud to invite visitors to the village and see how beautiful it is.

Residency Approved

Residency Approved

| by Jessica

We applied for Belize Residency in August 2018 after living here for a full year. We had our interview in August (2 weeks after submitting) and a follow up police interview about a month after that. Then we waited. I had heard complaints that residency applications could take YEARS to get approved. Surprisingly, we got the call in January that we were approved!! It only took 6 months.

Maya Immersion with Mom

We offer a lot of tours at the hotel and I try to go on all of them so I know of them first hand. I saved the Maya Immersion tour to do with my mom during her visit in January. Both of us are very crafty, so I was especially excited to take her to the basket weaving demonstration. And, of course, the kids tagged along too.

Newbie bloopers

I think my mistakes in life are the things that make me laugh the hardest. Once enough time has passed, the most embarrassing moments are usually the funniest to think back on. It will be fun to put some of these in writing and have them to look back on for a good laugh. These are some of our funny mess-ups while being resort owners.

To the States for Christmas

| by Jessica

This year, after successfully submitting our application for Residency, the travel restrictions were lessened and we were able to travel to the States for Christmas. First, the kids and I flew to Minnesota to visit my family, then we flew to Florida to meet up with Ryan and his family. So we got to see both grandparents.

How to buy sneakers in Dangriga

How to buy sneakers in Dangriga

Somehow, this past fall, Rex’s feet must have grown very quickly and I found myself in immediate need of some new sneakers. Obviously, after living in Belize for over a year, I knew a next day delivery from Zappos was not gonna happen. I would probably have to drive 2 hours to Belmopan or 1.5 hours to Placencia to find a shoe store. But I didn’t want to make that drive, at least not anytime soon.

Hopkins Garifuna Immersion

I’ve heard so many amazing things about the Garifuna Immersion tour from day one, so this past summer I decided to take the kids.

Scam or not, you decide

| by Jessica

We’ve owned the hotel and restaurant for one year now. I have to say, the best part of owning this business is meeting and talking with all the guests. I really enjoy meeting people and hearing about their lives back home: their stories. But this story is about our our very unique guest, I’ll call Rick. I am not using his real name, to protect his privacy.

TIL: What is a Savings Syndicate

| by Jessica

One of the great things about moving to another country is learning how things are done differently. From when we are young, we learn about how to get through life from our parents, teachers, and community. And that is happening all over the world, except sometimes there are very different means to the same end.
